Devon Morgan
Devon Morgan was a Black American teenager from Baltimore’s Roland Park neighborhood. He was the younger son of Alexander and Dinah Morgan and the brother of Tyrone. Devon was diagnosed with ADHD, major depressive disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder in fall 2014 after depression that had begun around 2012. His treatment and his work at the West Baltimore Recreation Center shaped his final year at Mount St. Joseph High School and his decision to pursue psychiatry.
Early Life and Background
Devon was born on August 22, 1997, and grew up in Roland Park. His father was an orthopedic surgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and his mother managed the Morgan household and later worked in family-support advocacy. His older brother, Tyrone, was born in 1990.
Devon attended Mount St. Joseph High School. Before his diagnoses, adults often interpreted his inconsistent academic performance as a failure to apply himself. Depression and untreated ADHD increasingly affected his concentration, motivation, appetite, and ability to complete schoolwork.
Summer 2014 Recreation Center Crisis
Devon volunteered at the West Baltimore Recreation Center during summer 2014. He initially participated largely for service hours and followed the center’s existing volunteer culture, including its neglectful treatment of Marcus “MJ” Henderson Jr.. His passivity made him complicit in that harm.
The crisis changed when Kelsey, Tre, Darnell, Kevin, and Jamal witnessed Shanice physically assault MJ. Devon saw the photographs documenting MJ’s bruises afterward, ended his relationship with Shanice, and gave the center’s director a written account of the neglect and aftermath he had witnessed. Shanice later retaliated through a Facebook post that portrayed Devon as dishonest. Devon declined to answer the post publicly and relied on private support from Tyrone, Keisha Clark, and Kelsey Morrison.
The following day, Devon collapsed from heat exhaustion while working at the recreation center. That collapse belonged to the summer sequence and was separate from the family and treatment crisis that occurred later in 2014.
Health and Disabilities
Devon’s depression began around 2012 and worsened over the next two years. In fall 2014, he was diagnosed with ADHD (combined presentation), major depressive disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder. A November 2014 crisis led his family to confront the severity of his condition and the need for sustained treatment.
Medication trials began with Lexapro in late October 2014, followed by Zoloft in November and Prozac in December. Those medications did not provide an effective long-term regimen. In February 2015, Devon began taking Effexor XR and Vyvanse, which improved both mood and concentration.
Devon also experienced pain-induced nausea and vomiting, a response he inherited from his father. Unlike Alexander, Devon perceived pain normally, but significant pain could trigger nausea that continued after the original pain had been treated.
Education and Career Direction
By spring 2015, Devon’s academic performance had improved with effective treatment. He applied to the University of Maryland, College Park and was admitted to its fall 2015 freshman class in late May, approximately two weeks before his high school graduation.
Devon entered UMD as an undeclared pre-science student and intended to pursue neuroscience, medical school, and psychiatry. His own delayed diagnoses contributed to his interest in becoming a psychiatrist.
Personality and Communication
Devon was reserved, observant, and sensitive to rejection. During severe depression, he withdrew from other people and had difficulty identifying or expressing what he needed. He often communicated care more easily through practical action than through direct emotional language.
At the recreation center, those actions included purchasing supplies and food for the children without seeking recognition. His later decision to report Shanice marked a shift from passive observation to direct responsibility for what he had witnessed.
Family and Core Relationships
Alexander Morgan

Devon shared his father’s pain-induced nausea response and was given Alexander’s first name as his middle name. Their relationship was affected by Alexander’s demanding expectations and by his failure to recognize the severity of Devon’s mental-health symptoms before the 2014 crisis.
Dinah Morgan

Dinah monitored Devon closely during his decline and treatment. She helped coordinate his care and remained involved through the medication trials that followed his diagnoses.
Tyrone Morgan

Tyrone understood Devon’s anxiety and rejection sensitivity through his own experience with anxiety and panic disorder. He supported Devon during the 2014 family crisis, helped him prepare his UMD application, and challenged Devon when fear presented itself as certainty that he would fail.

Devon and Shanice dated for approximately three months in summer 2014. He ended the relationship after seeing the photographs of the bruises she left on MJ and receiving a slur about the child by text. Shanice’s subsequent Facebook post intensified Devon’s isolation but did not change his decision to give the center a written account.
Kelsey Morrison

Devon met Kelsey through the recreation center in summer 2014. Their friendship deepened during his diagnosis and medication trials, with Kelsey providing research, practical support, and direct challenges to his rejection-driven assumptions. They began a romantic relationship after Devon received his UMD acceptance in late May 2015.
